Ah, just that the Cuba’s economy before the revolution was largely exporting sugar cane, presumably at super low prices because puppet government. The revolution happened in 1959, and high fructose corn syrup was invented around 1964.
Basically, I suspect that before the revolution and the turmoil of anti colonization in the Caribbean more generally, it didn’t make economic sense to go through the ridiculous process of torturing corn cobs to produce syrup.
