I find he’s got pretty pedestrian takes on pop culture, most of them just are a combination of contrariness and “it used to be better”. Even if you dress your takes up in socialist clothing, they’re still starting from that boring starting point. And just to be clear, I do agree with him sometimes, Lovecraft Country being the most obvious example, but I don't think he brings anywhere near the insight to pop culture that he does to politics and civics.
