  • I would say there's more evidence for that being true for Spain than for Germany. Like, there were explicitly anti-clerical elements in the Spanish government. While that position was correct, it's a fundamentally dangerous one to a broad cross section of Spanish society. Whereas the threat in Germany was to the Junkers and established industrialists.

    Plus it's hard to compare the incredibly fractious civil society of Spain to that of Germany. The government was incredibly weak in Spain (of all stripes) compared to that of Germany. The Weimar republic was weak, but the states were still strong under Weimar. Spain had nothing that compared.
