It's blowing my mind seeing a CNN interviewer being open minded, actually listening, and agreeing with what are considered today as "left wing" viewpoints in America. Like saying matter of fact the wealthy control the media and as a result shape the boundaries of public discourse and the host straight up agrees - because it's true!! Seeing someone working for CNN having their own thoughts in realtime and not just regurgitating counter talking points for "balance" is an interesting contrast to the shit today. Literally didn't Cuomo or whatever other talking head on CNN get pissy a little while ago when Sanders / a surrogate said the same fact? Maybe Ted Turner is just a good interviewer. I have no other context for who he is besides this video that popped into my YouTube recommends. The contrast imo is stark.

The difference is that the Soviet Union existed in 1989, and no longer exists now.

Somewhere in the past decade I sort of dismissed Sagan along with all the other icons of the new atheist movement This is like the third time in the past couple of weeks that he reappeared on my radar and I was wrong to lump him in with those grifters. He wrote a book with a soviet dude and was supposedly not unsympathetic to his ideals.

Except he says in the video that the Soviet Union isn't a democracy and "is moving in that direction" and repeats the American civil religion stuff and the myth of the US being a democracy "in principle" and whatnot.
