Know a guy who proudly stated how he loves to play the devils advocate just to test my knowledge or whatever. I asked him to not do that once, because it's just shitty and pointless.

Yup and these guys definitely exist in the wild, proudly.

I've spent 5 years studying a field, they always devils advocate me on my work if I make the mistake of talking about it. And typically tell me how my field works, which they know nothing about.

It's kind of amazing, the confidence I mean.

It's very fitting to name the concept that, because like the namesake, the asshole is an asshole (and often, worse) both ways anyway.

The computer toucher types that got the worst possible understanding of Spock from Star Trek and LARPs as some kind of emotionless (but also contemptful of emotions) condescending passive-aggressive contrarian asshole. With fake politeness, these types infest reddit-logo (and sometimes here) with "who hurt you?" style put-downs, trying to silence people that care too much about things or maybe criticize their treats. They also commonly like to say dehumanizing shit like all social interactions are transactional, that people they don't like are "NPCs," that "human nature" means everyone is (and ought) to be a sadistic murderfucker that only cares about breeding and/or wealth accumulation, and so on.

Having English professors look down their noses at me and tell me that "genre fiction" was universally bad and childish and only gritty grimy contemporary stories that try so hard to be nonformulaic that it becomes the formula, where nothing happens in the story but unlikable characters smoking, drinking, cussing, having sex and/or receiving/enjoying SV, and maybe doing self-harm until it all (predictably) ends in a pretentiously unsatisfying way to "artfully" make the reader feel like they wasted their time, were worthy of the snobs' approval.

        contrarianism

No lie though that describes some of my absolute favourite queer lit. I like the subversions of commonly accepted narrative structures. Orange Book.

I haven't read that particular one and know nothing about it so I can't really comment upon it. My issue is primarily the dogma of "all genre fiction is bad but 'contemporary' totally isn't its own genre" so professors could push their particularly favorite slop on all students and try to indoctrinate them into One True Fiction obedience.

          I-was-saying

Disco Elysium had magnificent worldbuilding, a rich inner life (of an utter disaster of a human being), metaphysically unique circumstances for its setting, cryptids, and I even thought the ending(s) were bittersweet yet still satisfying.

Those professors I mentioned would hate it from the start because it didn't take place in a real life city and didn't name-drop specific brands of items seen on the shelfs of rooms where the misanthropic characters smoke, cuss, and hurt themselves.

              UGH.

I tried to block out most of that "non genre" genre gritty pretentious wine liberal slop, but for some reason (probably because the professor decided to spend a week of class time exhaustively delving into it) a particular short story called "Why Don't You Dance?" was like his favorite work of all time and its only mercy was that it was so short... but six hours of class time delving into the boomerriffic ennui may have been the start of my decision of "I've decided I don't like boomers and their values and ideology are as toxic as the lead in their brains" since then.

omfg I have a coworker who is just like this and he is a turbochud who claims to be apolitical.

Every now and then I will pull up something to completely factually correct him and I can just see the look of cognitive dissonance at being proven wrong in front of an audience and the frustration flowing from it and then he just moves on and forgets it ever happened, continuing to condescend to me and act like the smartest person in the room on every SINGLE topic despite the fact I have repeatedly proven him wrong just on memory, then I have to wait till a break so I can get my phone pull up a source and be like NO MOTHERFUCKER YOU ARE AN IDIOT STOP ACTING SMUG.

Ah same, my guy is in tech and is related to me. He never really listens to what I say and starts to impose his understandings of what I think and am like on me often before I can even finish what I was trying to say.

Likes to throw out things like "dunning-kruger", but when I reply with something like "doesn't actually exist" just completely dismisses me and trucks on with those prefixed ideas.

He also loves to state how he is a feminist and on the side of equality. Thinks other men are misogynist, but treats the women in his life in a very condesending way. Exhausting to try and talk to.

My least favorite type of guy is someone who alludes to having a vast pool of knowledge on a topic but chooses not to demonstrate it because you are not worth the effort. But they would still like you to know how bemusedt by your ignorance on this topic they are. On account of their vast, vast pool of knowledge.

the level of ignorance being demonstrated towards how the economy/AI/governing actually works is truly entertaining

My second least favorite type of guy is murderers.
