All active rebel groups in Syria (that aren't Turkish proxies) have some amount of Salafist influence. It was probably enticing to support a "peace" project within Syria that wasn't aligned with the Syrian government, but that's pretty much impossible. Even the celebrated White Helmets have a history of being a bit too friendly with terror orgs.
