Most people arent willing to do the required work to the liquid/capsules to prevent an OD on other drugs thrown in with it (decongestants and shit) and to prevent the gel in the pills/all the nasty sugar and flavorings in the liquid from giving you the shits.
Yeah, you never want to take a recreational dose of a DXM product with other active ingredients, but many people unwisely still do. The thing is, there are plenty of formulations with only DXM (at least in the US). Just DXM with a little bit of sorbitol is as easy to get as a bottle of advil, and anyone motivated to try it can find that out with a quick web search.
That's true! I can imagine that if the duration were longer it'd be illegal by now most likely

DXM is legal. Even over the counter. Duration is hours and it is arguably much more of a mindfuck than nitrous.
