Matt lays out his preference for squibs over CGI bullet wounds, and expands it into a larger Marxist analysis about how profit concerns increasingly strangle creativity

The stuff about how cgi guns don't usually have recoil really got to me. I see it all of the time now.

I noticed that a few years ago and it's really weird. Another thing that once I noticed it became infuriating was the use of blue filters over cameras during daylight shoots to simulate nighttime, and it sucks.

The blue filter one has been going on since pretty much the beginning of cinema, and it looks completely bad. It used to be impossible to get a good picture when you were filming at night, so you needed to shoot during the daytime with a blue filter to fake it. Cameras have been good enough to shoot in the dark for a long time now, but people are just too lazy/cheap to film at night.

Strange Days also shot most of its footage at night. You'll probably never see another movie with that many night scenes again. Edit: urban core night scenes I guess I should add, since the headache of clearing the streets and all that other business.

Lighting night to read realistically as night to viewers is still really expensive, and cameras getting better light sensitivity or using high speed lenses won't change that unfortunately.

Lights getting cheaper and smaller has helped a bit, but you're going to see it in low budget shows that can't afford lifts until they figure out another way to get 200+ lbs of lights 80ft in the air.

Matt's boomer level takes on pop culture are the funniest part of his vlogs. Edit: ok, I'm being a little strong on "all pop culture". Really I mean his squib thing is a prime example of an unexamined bias that he chooses to justify, even if it's a pretty pedestrian take to begin with. I don't find his explanation convincing.

he addresses age (well, acclimation really) right at the beginning, have you heard this one?

Yes, and I think he's reaching on this one. He goes further on the topic and it kind of becomes a meme in subsequent vlogs.

Really, I'm mostly referring to this topic; I feel he really does come into it "squibs are good", then builds a framework atop it to justify what starts out as a pretty pedestrian "practical effects are good folks" take. And I don't think he's willing to recognize it's a pretty boomer level "they don't make them like they used to" beginning to his discussion.

I don’t think he’s willing to recognize it’s a pretty boomer level “they don’t make them like they used to” beginning to his discussion.

lol I just reminded you that he specifically addresses this

Yes, and I don't find his address of it convincing, particularly how squibs becomes a hobbyhorse for him later in the series.

ugh I can't get over it though, CGI bullet wounds suck and pull me out of the movie (he isn't saying CGI in general)

he recently said the only case he wouldn’t hate CGI would be if it was so perfect he wouldn’t notice and even then he’d be annoyed but would accept his fate.
