They didn't actually like him, but he knew they cared about the Supreme Court, so his team wrote up a list of insane judges that would overturn Roe v Wade and the ACA. He played the game. Biden just expects the Left's vote without throwing a bone. Democrats are bad at winning at politics.

He brought his Contract with Black America idea to both the Dems and Trump, the Dems said they'd talk about it after the election, and Trump's campaign worked to get some of his plan into a policy they're campaigning on.
