Ironically, there's no clearer illustration of Marx's idea that all profit is value stolen from the worker than professional services that charge by the hour.
Consultant ghoul is being paid very well, but most of that money is going to their boss.
Consulting firms are the inevitable spawn from evolution of monopolies. Once monopolies start to shed their labor costs, labor firms form to fill the need, and begin their own efforts to reduce the cost and squeeze efficiency out of their product (entry/low-level employee labor).
I refer particularly to the industrial/engineering sector, but I'm sure there's parallels in healthcare and political consulting firms.
