The Nazis built a gigantic concrete test pillar near Tempelhof airport, in order to test how well the area would keep buildings like the Volkshalle and Hitler's planned triumphal arch up. If it sank less than 6cm into the ground, building could commence without expensive and time consuming stabilisation work. When it was measured in 1948, the cylinder had sunk 19cm into the ground.
