Weird story. No news yet on what contract terms were broken, but supposedly a judge has already ruled that Tuulik cannot work on the game until April 2025. The millionaire who sued him says ZA/UM is not involved but their lawyers sent something to Tuulik. Said millionaire is also involved in two of the Disco successors, neither of which is Summer Eternal.

Very messy situation, but if the worst of it is that Tuulik can't officially work on the game for six months, that's not too bad?

wouldn’t whichever project comes next from kurvitz be the true successor?

Depends. He was responsible for a lot of the lore and world building and is definitely the figurehead, but people like Tuulik did a lot of the actual writing in the game as well. They talk about their contributions in the documentary about the whole scandal. One of these projects has the art director, I believe.

Kurvitz didn't do it alone so I'd personally go with whichever company has the most former employees that worked on the parts most relevant to you or that were generally the highest quality.

Which right now is Summer Eternal.

I understand that making a game requires a team of talented people & all that. But generally I feel like the most impactful narratives come from games where there is a singular passionate creative steering the whole thing. Some games like that are almost entirely a one man show like Undertale for example. Dark souls you only ever hear Miyazaki's name really. I don't really have overwhelming evidence off hand for my theory here it's just kinda a vibe. I'm sure one could whip up examples of splintering artists surpassing the previous project as counter examples

Jokes aside, it's really crazy how ZA/UM created something so truly 1 of 1. I feel so bad for everyone involved it all seems like a giant mess of IP law and interpersonal drama and all of that multiplied cause real money is on the table. All the while Amazon of all place is making a TV show or whatever of the game. Seems really bad, and one of those things that once it's over everyone will feel like they lost.

you can't call it that, please stop calling it that, leftist-infighting would imply that any of these feuding studios besides Summer Eternal are actually leftists, they are not. calling it ''leftist-infighting'' is an actively hurtful narrative that muddies the truth; a bunch of big shot financiers wearing the skin of Disco Elysium are doing everything they can to smother out their communist competition before it even launches a single project
