My GF went to put a picture of my niece online and I was like 'okay cool' and then a little part of me was like "hmmmmmmm". So I took a second to think why I felt like this was not a good thing to do.
I care about this little human person, I want them to have the best life possible. Will putting a picture of them online, with me in it also, do anything towards that end?
There are obvious immediate risks to it, irrational they may be statistically speaking. But I have no idea what society will be like when they're old enough to make a choice for them selves in the interests of their own privacy. I would be taking that choice away from her. That could potentially be a very very bad thing for her.
Plus I literally have zero right to do this. Which made me think...neither does my sister really. And fuck, pretty much everyone else I know does this without a thought.
I don't touch social media so this sort of thing doesn't really come in to my thinking usually but damn.
Yeah I personally hate the idea. Imagine growing up and there's already content of you floating around online? Dumb videos? Stories about yourself? And you'd have no way of truly removing that. Just keep that offline as much as possible imo, it should be all up to them
