All my mom watches is all of those Murder shows on cable like Forensic Files and the like. She's been watching this since I can remember and long before I ever heard the term "true crime". I legit think shows like this are why so many gen-x and boomers are terrified of the world. They all open talking about how the small town that the case happened in was using almost identical language each time, " here in x we don't lock our doors, everybody knows everybody, things don't happen like this in x, we stop and help people on theroad ". And as a person who grew up in a small town I'm like what? Everyone there is the most paranoid castle doctrine ass motherfucker I've ever met. They don't know their neighbors and they treat anyone who they don't know as threats. Then the show goes at lengths to show you how kind, pretty, full of life, etc the victim is so they can then go into detail about how they were brutalized.
I don't know where I'm going with this rant it's just something that's been on my mind for a while.
"True Crime" + Dr. Phil did more damage to American minds than lead poisoning could ever have hoped to.
Dr Phil should play Minecraft just for the troubled teen industry stuff alone. Listening to The Game was heartbreaking.
I listened to the game a year or so ago and it was shocking. One of those "crimes of this nation moments for me".
Listening to The Game was something else. They should it all on vinyl. I'd buy it. Easily the best Tru Annon series. Absolutely heart wrenching stuff but as someone who's worked at 'Organic' stores and has dealt with hippies and new age creeps a lot, it really explained a lot.

Didn't realize I wanted this til you said it, but yeah this would be nice.

I actually forgot that it was created by new age addiction recovery cultists. Need to relisten to the series.
If you're interested in weird far right new age cults, I strongly recommend the QAA episode on the I AM Activity (167) and the Nonsense Bazaar episodes on the same (if you're willing to put up with some [not far right] new age hippies for a few hours). Blew my mind to find out the degree to which modern new age movements were influenced by esoteric fascists. The entire twin flame concept even.
I'll for sure give that a listen. I am bey8nd fascinated by the compromising of the hippies, mk ultra, new age stuff linked to fascism, the fact that most of DC hardcore had secret service dads all that shit. When I'm old i may be able to piece enough together to write a book, 20th century cointerculture being absolutely full of weirdos and ops (as in operatives, not the newfangled slang for opponents). It's a borderline obsession. Fucking Leonard Nimoy went to Synanon and did a The Game several times. The tendrils of this high weirdness are everywhere. I used to be a discordian and Robert Anton Wilson guy, I get where the tech bros came from. I don't have a tinfoil hat but I do have a sleuthy fedora and trenchcoat metaphorically, I hate hats and wear either a double breasted peacoat or a tattered jean jacket. There's no puzzle but a lot of pieces with this.
Is "The Game" a podcast? I tried to find it but nothing relevant is coming up
It's a series of podcast episodes Trueanon did about the TTI. Try searching for Trueanon The Game.
As said below, it's a series Tru Annon did. If they didn't unlock the full thing I'll find it for you. It's their magnum opus.
Edit: turns out they uploaded it all as a YouTube Playlist. I can't think of a trigger warning that wouldn't apply to this, it's really dark.

My mom spent a good chunk of my childhood binge watching Judge Judy and I think it had a similar yet also different brain rotting effect. She was a really paranoid cynic who believed everyone was constantly trying to fuck everyone else over. She instilled a fear in me and my sister that we couldn't trust anyone, everyone was just waiting for an opportunity to sue us for some BS. Made us both really maladjusted kids for most of our youth.
My dad would watch all the day time TV like Jerry Springer, Cops, and the like. All the shows where the point was to dehumanize and denigrate the poor.
Added with "Missing White Woman Syndrome" and you got crakkkers convinced they ass is in danger 24/7.
Yeah some white woman goes missing and they have detectives still looking 40 years later but a serial killer murders black and brown sex workers and homeless women and they forget next week.
I've mostly fallen off of it but I used to listen to LPOTL a fair amount, and one thing I will give them credit for is they always acknowledge this and give cops shit over it.
CW mention of violence against various vulnerable groups
spoiler
Cops don't care about POC, sex workers, homeless people, gay men, and a lot of the worst serial killers back in the day went on for as long as they did because that's who they targeted. They called these victims/the phenomenon of cops just not caring to investigate crimes against them "the less dead"
Used to listen to it all the time before it blew up to what it is today. It was out of a morbid fascination and an intrigue into the lowest levels of human depravity.
Funny thing is I’m still as carefree as ever even though the town I live in is a lot more dangerous than where I was living when I first got into it.
Edit: I do know someone exactly as the type of people you described. One of my older American relatives. Lives in a very nice neighborhood with a nonexistent crime rate but is convinced everyone else is out to get her. Locks all the doors to her house and checks them twice, terrified of the city because she constantly watches news channels that tell her it’s a place where you will get shot, afraid of damn near anything that’s not some place she can drive to within five minutes.
Stayed with her as a kid briefly and I couldn’t go to sleepover parties because she listened to a radio news show that mentioned some people dying during one. She consumed early True Crime shows like 20/20, Dateline, 60 minutes, etc. all the time and it made her increasingly paranoid.
Thus reminds me of Tony Soprano's mom Livia keeps bringing up mother's throwing their babies out of highrises. Just the mind of a person who's only perception of the outside world is the 24/7 news cycle.
It's kind of a red flag when I meet people if they are really too into this shit.
One of my coworkers is like that. He wants to start a YouTube channel about it.
Yeah same here.
One true crime podcaster mentioned that the most likely people to watch these kind of shows are those that are obsessed with trying to find red flags in others so they won't get murdered.
It's not good for anxiety at all and not good for their dating lives either.
Yeah, my most recent ex listened to this stuff all the time and she was like that.
I won't go into details but sometimes it legit made me worried for her sanity. People start seeing plots and violence everywhere and suspect everyone, a reasonable level of fear and anxiety is understandable but it can get very unreasonable very fast with these people. It's really not healthy.
Naturally, she was also one of these "humans are an evil virus that should be destroyed" crypto-fascists too.
It pisses me off how so many of the stories are basically "and the killer escaped once again, because the cops were too busy smoking crack and jacking off to CP," and then act all congratulatory and grateful for the police when they finally get their shit together enough to solve the problem they could have solved three murders ago.
because the cops were too busy
I live in a big state with very small population. My state has a nonimally strict "three strikes you're out" DUI law. In reality - the law is a joke. For many DUI cases - the cops literally don't show up in court and the cases are dropped. It's not usual to see news of a tragic accident done by a driver with ~5 DUIs or even more due to the fucking cops being lazy.
I wonder how many states like mine have a similar DUI problem. I did some googling and google is such shit that it wrongly gave me this article about Montana: Man Arrested for His 7th DUI After Crashing on I-90 in Missoula.
Montana used to have drinking and driving be legal not too long ago. I think they only got rid of it in like 2006 or some shit. Not sure if they had BAC limits to go with it, though.
Montana used to have drinking and driving be legal not too long ago.
That beats my state by a mile. We "only" had drive-thru liquor stores until ~25 years ago when they were banned. I'm American but I've never understood the caviler attitude of car-brained Americans towards booze and driving.
Cops either know who it is for 8 years and fuck it up so bad they can't arrest the guy or the grab the nearest black man who they can say was within 50 miles of the crime.
They don't know their neighbors and they treat anyone who they don't know as threats.
How old are the crimes?
My understanding is that everyone being alienated from all their neighbors is a relatively new phenomenon. In the 80s or whatever, they might have known a lot of the people around them.
That's possible, a lot are from the 80s and 90s. But the 80s were the milk carton kid era and satanic panic so I think it might have began then.
Rather than individual killings etc real ones obsess over shit like the Brabant Killings that are connected to the intelligence community and then come across as completely unhinged in conversations with friends and family.
For real though there is always something off about True Crime, even more so when it's current/unsolved crimes being exploited for Patreon money or whatever.
Yeah the gladio and global anti-communist terror org stuff is my shit.
Too many people are talking about True Crime and not enough about spending Time with their Crew.
When I was a kid we'd watch America's Most Wanted because we had like 5 channels because cable TV was so expensive. It would make me terrified watching these "real life monsters." Then around that time we also lived sorta near where the DC Sniper was active and it just was terrifying to think about as a kid especially with the news talking nonstop about them. Then our house got burglarized and now I just have a paranoia that can get extremely intrusive. It's taken a while for me to really get control over it and know how to manage it without severe anxiety. Dumb stuff like having a set hand motion every time I lock my car so I don't question myself and return to double check.
That's interesting. I never really thought about it, but it makes sense, it's a damn effective way of further individualizing people based on pure fear.
There's a similar problem here in Brasil, but it's with the glorification of the police, of police brutality and glorification of violence in general. There's a bunch of famous "journalistic" programs in here, like Cidade Alerta (Alert City, or something like that in english), where these things are heavily glorified, like, daily.
There's this incredible video by Chavoso da USP (CW: SA of a minor being mentioned in the video), where he talks about this in detail, if you can, watch it, it's incredibly well done, the auto translation of the subtitles to english is fairly good.
And well, this isn't just a problem in television anymore. For years now, police action and brutality have been recorded, livestreamed and posted online, specially on youtube. Hell, I opened youtube on incognito mode just now, and this was one of the thumbnails in the front page:

ShowYeah, it's a whole video of police going after people on motorcycles. Not only that, but my brother and his friends watch this stuff regurlarly.
Chavoso also talks about it in this other video, which is sort of a continuation of the other one I linked above.
I was gonna mention something else to show how media molds what is accepted or not on society, in turn also molding what is accepted to be shown in media, but it was so fucked up I got sick to my stomach just thinking about it. I think everything I said above provides a good picture of this same effect happening in a different way here in Brasil, shaping the collective imaginary of the masses through the media we consume and are exposed to.
Yeah this same stuff exist in America as well, especially the YouTube stuff which I feel is the Copaganda for the newer generations. I'll get it in my recommendations and I know some people who watch it where it's just hours and hours of bodycam footage of "takedowns".
I found YouTube links in your comment. Here are links to the same videos on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

I watch some tc videos on youtube at night every week and I've never felt like this and I don't know anybody that has, then again check this out, I'm in portugal and as with many other things when watching american media, even if it's about real things, it has that feeling of not actually being real and that it could only happen in america and not here with me. It's like disneyland
