I know Fox news is pushing just blatant misinformation about the virus and severity of everything, but what about the other networks like MSNBC and CNN? I only watch DemocracyNow and Al Jazeera for American news and don't have cable.

Are other networks at least trying to be sort of honest? Are they blaming everything on Trump? What's the deal?

There's a reason libs think that Trump is directly responsible for 150k deaths.

Non-FOX outlets seem to think it's all Trump's fault.

I do actually have a theory about places like MA and VT, two of the better states overall:

These two states are blue nationally, but currently have GOP governors. So they've actually been taking everything even more seriously than blue states with Dem govs. Because there needs to be a clear line between their local parties and the president, or they lose political power.

Also, the fact that MA is among the best states, but would be among the worst European countries speaks fucking volumes.

The current debate is whether to open schools (usually happens in mid August-September in the US). News isn’t downplaying the severity but frames it as “but if we shut things down the cure will be worse than the virus!” and generally as an argument between protecting individual freedoms and the economy vs. restrictive countermeasures to oppress and control the populace. Also they try to shift the blame on increasing infection rates as the fault of protesters (never mind that most protesters wear masks and protests happen outside where transmission risks are lower) and irresponsible young adults partying despite the risks, ignoring the politicians who let bars/restaurants/shops open, and the boomers who go to them refusing to wear masks.

I'm actually working with some ex-colleagues from the school I used to work in to organize the Math department against going back to an unventilated school built int he 1960's with kids starting in August.

The union president is married to one of the administrators, so they clearly are compromising their rank and file workers for personal reasons.

Yeah we're not too sure wtf we are going to do about schools reopening either. My provincial government has done a fantastic job handling the pandemic, among the best in the world (when you look at States/Provinces/European Countries and rank them accordingly) but we still have no idea what's going to happen in September. Parents are tired and nervous and anxious and of course everyone wants shit to go back to normal but well, that's never going to happen :/

i think the school issue is difficult. if you go back to school, you will have massive increases in cases and deaths. if you go online only, you put enormous pressure on parents - schools are responsible for feeding many children and often act as daycare. if you do a “hybrid” approach you’ll get the worst of both worlds, except it’ll likely be primarily lower-income children going to school and getting sick, plus more pressure on teachers.

If these motherfuckers put us on the dole or canceled rent there'd be a lot less protesting. Not that abolition would be any less necessary.

There's a lot of hero-worshiping going on in liberal spaces about Dr. Fauci. They invent these heroes month to month out of whatever person with a shred of dignity is willing to speak out against Trump. Fauci is decent, I guess, I don't know a lot about him but he's trying to use that "celebrity" status he has now to push out more health related updates and pleading for people to wear masks, which again, strikes me as a decent and somewhat wise use of his time in the limelight. There's not a lot of talk on the major TV networks about how this pandemic was used, disaster capitalism style, to funnel more wealth to the bourgeoisie.

    Orange Man Bad

That's pretty much the extent of it IMO. The elites are fully disconnected from the average working person. I think it's not just that they don't care and/or are maneuvering to maintain power through corporate double-dealing, but that they have genuinely no idea what it means for like 90% of someone's income to go to health insurance and housing... if they are lucky enough to even have those.

I honestly don't think a neoliberal administration would have been able to do much better though. The propaganda narrative would have been different but I doubt there would be any less suffering. They would still be spraying corrosive chemicals on illegally detained asylum seekers. In fact, the chuds may have gone even more fully insane if it wasn't their guy pulling the levers. I feel like we would have seen a lot more stochastic terror at the street level. All speculation here though.

A lot of recent coverage (last two days) has focused on how returning to school is gonna look in a bunch of the states. Right now, CNN and MSNBC are blaming Trump -- but that might change as schools actually open up. I know there are a hell of a lot of libs in my state that are pissed off enough at the governor to forget their anger at Trump for the (very brief) moment.

It's 90% "orange man bad" and right now a large portion of the other 10% is "people didn't do the shutdown right and now everyone is gonna die"

I literally had to stop all engagement with news because everything that I hear is just different/ conflicting with the last thing I heard. I just keep track of my local news to find out what the governor and town council are doing.
