Out of the 5 or so people i know who live in Portland, two of them have experienced violence on their [two separate] blocks in the past month. A stabbing and a drive-by. Shit happens, but it seems that general instability might be causing things to heat up. I'd guess the drive by was gang related, but idk how the "real economy" and the "gang economy" interact with each other. I'm sure it can't be good though.
