    I used to feel strange about Beyond/Impossible meatlike products, but then I was reading a medieval cookbook and I learned that disguising your vegetables to look and taste like meat is a human practice going back centuries. It just kinda died out (edit: in western countries) with the rise of the modern meat industry and was rediscovered in a new context with the rise of veganism.

      the buddhists made an art form out of that shit and continue to do it because its cheap as hell to produce.

      never went away in probably most non-western cultures. dishes like chai pow yu being an ancient mock meat that is still widely eaten today
