Here's what I got so far:
- The term "capitalism" was invented by a socialist (either Louis Blanc, Pierre Joseph Proudhon, or Karl Marx, depending on which historian you ask)
- The term "capitalism" was originally created to refer to private control of the means of production, and had nothing to do with market systems. The libertarian "capitalism = free markets" definition is a revisionist definition
- The term "meritocracy" was invented for satirical purposes by Michael Young; he wrote a facetious book about how a society stratified on the basis of "merit" would become a dystopia
- The term "privatization" was invented to describe something the Nazis did
- The term "libertarian" originally referred to anarcho-communists
- The term "the economy" wasn't commonly used until the great depression
- Karl Marx supported gun rights
- Albert Einstein was a socialist
- Charlie Chaplin was a socialist
- Bertrand Russell was a socialist
- Malala Yousafzai is a socialist
- Wallace Shawn is a socialist (INCONCEIVABLE!)
- George Orwell was a socialist (although a pretty bad one)
- Joseph Weydemeyer was a Prussian communist military officer who came to the US during the American Civil War to fight on the side of the Union Army. After the war was won, he joined the Republican Party
- August Willich was a Prussian communist military officer who came to the US during the American Civil War and supported the Union Army. He, like Weydemeyer, joined the Republican Party after the war was won
- The New York Tribune, a Republican-aligned newspaper, employed Karl Marx as its European correspondent between 1852 and 1862
- Karl Marx congratulated Abraham Lincoln when Lincoln got reelected
- The idea that "money was created to make bartering easier" is an ahistorical myth. The first currencies were created by militaries so that they could fund themselves - they levied taxes in a currency that they controlled the supply of, which made people have to sell them food and supplies in order to get currency to pay the taxes.
- The FBI killed Fred Hampton and tried to get MLK to kill himself
- A civil trial in 1999 found that MLK's assassination was a conspiracy involving the US government
- The US is a rogue state that refuses to obey international criminal courts
- Henry Kissinger, beloved figure of the foreign policy establishments of both parties, once said this regarding Chilean democracy in the context of the 1973 coup: "I don't see why we need to stand by and watch a country go communist due to the irresponsibility of its people. The issues are much too important for the Chilean voters to be left to decide for themselves."
- The US government killed Anwar al-Awlaki in September 2011; Abdulrahman al-Awlaki in October 2011; and Nawar al-Awlaki in January 2017. All three were American citizens.
- Gary Webb was an investigative journalist who worked on the involvement of the CIA in the crack-cocaine drug trade. He was found dead in his home with two bullet wounds to the head. It was ruled a suicide.
- “The money that’s made from manufacturing stuff is a pittance in comparison to the amount of money made from shuffling money around.” - Ray Dalio, hedge fund manager, in 2004 (Ray Dalio's net worth as of 2020 is app. $20 billion)
- The US military used depleted uranium munitions in Fallujah, Iraq in 2004. Ever since then, Fallujah has had the highest rate of birth defects in the world, a rate similar or possibly even higher than that of Hiroshima, Japan in the years following the atomic bomb in 1945. https://twitter.com/FDefects
I love posting these JFK quotes on Cuba:
I believe that there is no country in the world including any and all the countries under colonial domination, where economic colonization, humiliation and exploitation were worse than in Cuba, in part owing to my country's policies during the Batista regime. I approved the proclamation which Fidel Castro made in the Sierra Maestra, when he justifiably called for justice and especially yearned to rid Cuba of corruption. I will even go further: to some extent it is as though Batista was the incarnation of a number of sins on the part of the United States. Now we shall have to pay for those sins. In the matter of the Batista regime, I am in agreement with the first Cuban revolutionaries. That is perfectly clear.
— U.S. President John F. Kennedy, to Jean Daniel, October 24, 1963
Fulgencio Batista murdered 20,000 Cubans in seven years ... and he turned Democratic Cuba into a complete police state—destroying every individual liberty. Yet our aid to his regime, and the ineptness of our policies, enabled Batista to invoke the name of the United States in support of his reign of terror. Administration spokesmen publicly praised Batista—hailed him as a staunch ally and a good friend—at a time when Batista was murdering thousands, destroying the last vestiges of freedom, and stealing hundreds of millions of dollars from the Cuban people, and we failed to press for free elections -JFK, October 6, 1960
Karl Marx congratulated Abraham Lincoln when Lincoln got reelected
:LIB:
Critical support for Abe Lincoln and his destruction of the Confederacy.
Karl Marx is cancelled for his support of genocidal fascist Abraham Lincoln 😤
-Reagan aid and coconspiritor John Erlichman said "The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did."
-During the Nixon administration, a Nixon appointed committee recommended a moratorium on prison construction.
-the modern border regime was created by Clinton
-adam smith and john Maynard Keynes opposed landlords
The phrase "open the economy up" drives me bananas. You cannot turn an economy off or on. There is something called a closed economy, but that's something else entirely and not what they mean.
Is the conflation of business and economy mostly a US thing?
Under socialism, no food means there would be no spiders to eat. You would protect yourself from 8 per year.
The New York Tribune, a Republican-aligned newspaper, employed Karl Marx as its European correspondent between 1852 and 1862
I thought Marx was a cool unemployed intellectual, and you're telling me he was actually a media ghoul?
I would just like to make the slight correction that markets are integral to the capitalist system as well as the contradictions within it and have always been understood as such. You are correct that capitalism!=markets however.
"As soon as the land of any country has all become private property, the landlords, like all other men, love to reap where they never sowed, and demand a rent even for its natural produce." - Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith.
Also, Eric Blair/George Orwell might be a bigoted cop but "he's actually a socialist" is a good breadpill that might sets 1984 fans down the pipeline.
if they cared about any of these things at all they wouldnt be liberals tho
Willich was an absolute chad. His famous frontal charge up Missionary ridge is what broke the South.
He once challenged Marx to a duel because Marx was a lib and he was the one true leftist on the sub.
One of the only decent commanders of 1848, hung out with Engles for most of it looking cool.
Jenny Marx had this to say about him
"Willich has gone so far as to send red Becker 3 decrees for forwarding to the Cologne Landwehr in which he gives them orders from here to mutiny, to nominate a provisional government in every company and to overthrow all civil and military authorities and have them shot if need be. And the Cologne Landwehr, at that, who are now quite happily talking pot politics in the city of their fathers on the Rhine's cool strand. If Willich is not ripe for the lunatic asylum, then I don't know who is. Schapper has obtained a passport from Hamburg, to enable him to take over in person Haude's occupation of emissary. Good luck to the hippopotamus!
We have also heard from Dronke. Mrs Moses has again persuaded her husband that he is 'poss' of the 'gommunists'. But you'll soon be here and can hear and see for yourself everything that's been going on. The Caperonians set upon and beat up red Wolff one night, and our friend had Wengler taken into custody. The next morning, when he had been sentenced, Willich ransomed him for 20 shillings."
Malala is unfortunately involved with a conservative student union at oxford, she said some nice things about socialism in 2013 but unfortunately idk if she could be classified as one
people here like to shit on orwell but he gets props for fighting the fascists in spain at least
btw russia/the ussr has also used depleted uranium munitions for a while. it's extremely dense and makes for better kinetic energy penetration
I know what was said here. I don't understand people who say shit like this when LGBT people (specially when they're trans and not white) can still get killed in non Muslim countries. We're killed both by direct violence and by systemic violence. The worrying numbers of homeless LGBT youth is just as violent as any other fantasy you have about Muslim countries.
