They did, totally. There was a posting war sometime back that reclaimed him because the alt right sucks so fucking bad. They still try to use it, even Alex Jones tried to sell stuff with it but he got sued by the actual original artist and had to settle for couple million 15k

The lawsuit was settled for $15,000 not millions. I would have been psyched if the artist got millions out of it, but it didn't happen. https://www.theverge.com/2019/6/10/18660312/infowars-pepe-the-frog-settlement-copyright-meme-alex-jones

Oh my bad, I'm dumb. I think he did try to get a lot more, his lawyers worked pro bono and for whatever reason I thought it was a lot more. Thanks

It started on 4chan before twitch and was used during the 2016 election for trump. But the alt right did basically highjack Pepe during that time. it use to be used for basically self loathing meme and or stuff about depression. It honestly was innocent memes for the most part. The original one being posted was the feelsgoodman meme. Which sucks cause it was good before it got tainted by the alt right :sadness:

The thing about the pepe meme was it was so widespread and so versatile (and still is to some extent) because a pepe could literally be ANYTHING. The two biggest groups who have held on to the meme are alt-righters and gamers and while there is definitely overlap between the two I would say both their usages/cooption of the meme were simultaneous for the most part.

Exactly yeah. It got added to the ADL hate symbols list too, which . meant every journalist covering it just flat out said it was bad so people just believed that if they didn't know any better

pepe is fine. its not 2015, its used more on twitch, than 4chan chuds and neonazis. stop letting them take things.

not defending vaush. he sucks. but not because of this, obviously.
