Separate it into multiple parts. Have a friend own part of the mechanism, and you hold the other part. When you have a gun taken apart, you no longer have a gun. You simply have metal parts that can be assembled into a gun.

From a legal standpoint someone still has a gun, but yes. This isn't a terrible idea.
