We'll see what the final numbers are, but I don't really think it's a cause for concern if they aren't much of an improvement. Most people didn't take the 2016 election all that seriously, whereas a lot more people treated this one like life or death. It would make sense if left-wing voters weren't interested in voting third party this time around.
Edit: I also compared the numbers for the Green Party in New York between 2016 and now: 1.4% in 2016, 0.35% this time around.
