What I never understood is how people wind up being Harry Potter fans and not fantasy / wizard genre fans
Marketing, marketing, marketing. I lived in several countries as kid and during the early 2000s Harry Potter ads were everywhere - ~"amazing new book good for any age". No other series compares in the hype it got. Someone with a lot of money and power decided to back it heavily.
