TIL about Ana Montes, who joined the US Defense Intelligence Agency and soon became its most senior Cuban analyst, all the while sharing information with Cuba.

She’ll be out in about two years

it was Ana Montes who told Cuban intelligence officers about a clandestine US Army camp in El Salvador. Carmichael alleged that Montes knew about the existence of the Special Forces camp because she visited it only a few weeks before the camp was attacked in 1987 by Cuban-supported guerrillas of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN).

"she felt the Cubans were treated unfairly by the U.S. government."

I got bored and researched some of the KGB/CIA convicted spies on either side. Disappointingly it seemed like most of them did it for the money, rather than ideological reasons. Doesn't look like it's the case for her though, which is nice :)

Apparently comrade Montes has probably been exposed to coronavirus at her facility

Also looks like one of her fellow prisoners is set to be executed after a really fucked up life. I'd consider it a sad miscairrage of "justice", but what's new?
