At the start of federation we had a user request programming.dev be added to our allow-list, we recently had a similarly upvoted request to remove programming.dev from our allow-list.
Recently, an admin of that instance reached out wanting to know what we could do to get programming.dev and hexbear.net back on federation.
I asked the admin if they would be open to continuing communications regarding any programming.dev users that are site-banned so that they could address the same user if they break the code of conduct on programming.dev
I went through our mod logs and found five programming.dev users site-banned from hexbear, two were for report abuse and three were for reactionary takes.
Programming.dev does not have any communities that would be considered reactionary, as the instance is focused on ... programming.
Their admin will most likely remove/block/silence any political communities on hexbear from the programming.dev side, as they are committed to removing communities that do not fit their niche.
Due to the communication from their admin, as well as the relative low amount of reactionary users relative to their 150+ active user base, I wanted to ask the community if we should add programming.dev back to our allow-list.

How do you feel about half measures in this particular instance?
I'm surprised a community reached out to federate with us. Cooperative admins is a good basis, and they don't seem that bad. Plus I really like Godot and Python.
- they seem nice enough, I was subscribed to some of the comms before we defeded. I think they're worth having around. For now.
Also god @CARCOSA@hexbear.net you NEED to pick different emotes for voting. Didn't you learn last time that the dean faces are hard to distinguish at a glance? I am begging you, just add some ballot emojis or something.
The mod sounds sensible and God knows online tech spaces needs more non-reactionary takes.
I think the userbase will be a reflection of the admins and they sound reasonable. I love programming too
Generally in favor of adding niche communities and I think I only saw like one shitty person (who was banned) in the time we were federated with them. Mostly they kept to themselves in their niche which is fine.
Edit: the admin from the other instance popping in & being cool changed my mind

. The programming.dev instance admin seems to be a good person operating in good faith. I'd love to engage with their community again! Just, not yet. Being in the Debate Pervert Zone for a couple weeks fried my brain. I think this is the way for federation in general, if there aren't any actively reactionary comms and the admins are willing to work with us I think a lot of the problems will smooth out over time
