Basically to survive. The Israeli government knows that its existence depends upon the disenfranchisement of Palestinians, so it won't stop oppressing them. Also, it needs to defend itself against hostile Arab neighbours, so it must maintain a strong military and alliances with great powers. If the United States were to see a big reduction in its ability to project power, Israel would be in deep shit.

I think it's kind of generational. Old Jews seem to be Zionists to their core while most young Jews I've known haven't given a shit about Israel or even hated it. There are definitely some young Zionists though, usually either devout Orthodox or yas kween neolibs.
