I don't really agree with drawing comparisons to ambient music. Not all music in the ambient genre has the same intended purpose but since the author is using Eno as an example it's worth pointing out that he didn't necessarily intend for it to be explicitly background music. It's meant to color specific moments, sure, but it's also meant to provide space for thought. He didn't even intend for calmness and serenity to be a requirement of ambient music, that's just the kind he prefers to create. I think there's a lot more to ambient music than the kind of television this author is describing.
