I am so sorry about your wife's relative. As someone who has suffered police brutality personally, I know it sucks. I wasn't shot but I was beaten and I had previous issues with police in my teens when they came to my school and drug tested me and threw me in the back of a squad car to do a whole 'scared straight' routine.
It's a humiliating experience. Cops make it a point to humiliate you when they are enacting violence against you. Even worse if it's in front of your family, as it was when it happened to me, cause you feel so powerless in front of them. Even worse is all the bootlickers who will say stuff to justify it like "just do what you're told and you won't get beat or shot!".
That is insane! I'm so glad he survived, but what an unspeakably terrible thing to do to another person, and what a terrible time to be in a hospital. I can't imagine the rationale for shooting someone for poaching--what, was he accused of killing the king's deer or something? You can tell him he's basically Robin Hood now.

If you can try recommending some therapy for him since this is no doubt a traumatic experience. He might not want to talk about it if pressed but will for sure need someone around if he needs to talk. Try to make sure no one blames him lest himself for getting shot.
I might be asking to much but maybe your wife is closer to that side of your family that they will hear her out. Take care of yourself too though since it sounds like it's affecting you too.
