If you can try recommending some therapy for him since this is no doubt a traumatic experience. He might not want to talk about it if pressed but will for sure need someone around if he needs to talk. Try to make sure no one blames him lest himself for getting shot.
I might be asking to much but maybe your wife is closer to that side of your family that they will hear her out. Take care of yourself too though since it sounds like it's affecting you too.
