the CIA will fund anything that will meet its goals. During the cold war, they funded everything from abstract art magazines to identity politics in universities.

The first I heard about Dissent Magazine was watching a youtube clip from Novara Media, they had two guests on that did some labour podcast for Dissent Magazine. I checked out dissent magazine's site, and the first article they had was about the fall of the Eastern Bloc by some Eastern European author. The article was about how the higher up apparatchiks had all sorts of privileges and were sending their children to elite Eestern Universities. I googled the author's name and the first hit was her page on the National Endowment for Democracy, the fucken CIA NED!

A few months later Novara, Lausen and Dissent Magazine were doing a seminar on China. The CIA isn't really too worried about left-progressives, if your position on hot topics like China coincides with their anti-China propaganda, there's no reason why they wouldn't secretly send you a few thousand to cover costs.

of course ,its always good to be skeptical these days. However its ridiculous to assume that anyone that criticizes China to any extent is a cia op.

well they've been pushing toothless strains of marxism in western academia these last 70 years so i wouldnt discount it. not to say this is exactly what happens here though, but one has to raise concerns given the closeness between em an CLB, and how staunchly they stood with empire in hong kong. didnt they push that shit about hongkongers as an ethnonym again

I mean yeah, its always good to be skeptical and I also dislike their obsession with Hong Kong. But these sources are still a lot better than the CCP/orientalist propaganda out there. And immediately dismissing me as a shill isn't really productive nor skepticism.
