A decade ago it would've been Skype. How badly did Microsoft fuck that up?
Skype got like split into losing to discord, slack and zoom. I think a part of what happened is they wanted it to be a competitor to Facebook messenger and in the meantime Discord took its casual use slot and Slack took the more professional side of things. Then zoom came along and finished things off.
Doesn't help that it sucked for group chats (which were increasingly the norm) compared to discord
