how I only ever heard about Zoom through podcast ads before the beginning of the year, and it's become a genericized trademark for any video chat by now

A decade ago it would've been Skype. How badly did Microsoft fuck that up?

Microsoft sucks and I say this as someone that loves my PC.

Remember they had the huge success in the west with the Xbox360 and could only hold on to that success for a single generation LOL.

Sorry, I know console wars are bullshit but the 360 to me was the console that produced the most capital G gamers of any generation. It doesn't help that I'm not a big fan of fps shooters and white male power fantasies.

They only had that success because the 360 was rushed to market to be first for both its console generation and the HD-DVD format. The 360's red ring of deaths and bad build quality alienated so many people, it was only inevitable that the Xbone and anything after it was not going to perform well.

I think they're setting up for a comeback this gen personally, what with all their big name developer/publisher acquirements.

Yeah I think they're gonna be pretty competitive, if not the outright winner this time, cause of having an entry level console + Game Pass

they do care about g*mers not xbox owners though like which actually makes sense they have a pretty bigger market share of the pc market so iike the xbox game pass is a move to start getting the pc g*mers like microsoft has been trying to get the pc gaming market for so long like windows live and then their awfull game store on windows 8 and 10 like they are still trying to get this market

IDEK if the 360 was a total success since it was outsold by the PS3 despite launching a year earlier (probably cause RROD + being a nonstarter in Japan). The XbOne being outsold by even the Switch is hilarious though

the switch situation makes sense because the switch in on a space by itself like i have no interest in having a ps5 because i have a pc and it is pretty good but i own a switch because i enjoy the handheld thing like the being it's own thing works out fine

Idk, I remember being confused why we weren't using skype when all this was beginning. To be fair I haven't used skype in like 5-6 years but still it made the most sense

Yeah it's a bit disorienting seeing "let's Zoom" overtaking "let's Skype" so quickly and suddenly in the common lexicon

Skype got like split into losing to discord, slack and zoom. I think a part of what happened is they wanted it to be a competitor to Facebook messenger and in the meantime Discord took its casual use slot and Slack took the more professional side of things. Then zoom came along and finished things off.

Doesn't help that it sucked for group chats (which were increasingly the norm) compared to discord

Jitsi worked pretty well for our DnD party when Discord was acting up.

Run a Jitsi Meet instance if you can.

I had the first Jitsi instance in my country with decent bandwidth and in the beginning it was great and very popular, but the last few versions unfortunately became unstable and memory hungry… I got tired of it randomly breaking every so often and stopped caring about that server. I'm sad about it but I don't have the time :(

For me Skype fucked it up by filling the space with so many damn ads. Discord came about and I hopped right into that and that was before Discord had video.

Kinda drunk fucked up the first comment. Basically they're too busy huffing the glue that is govt project $$$ to act like a real competitor in any space

Look at what they're doing across all their projects?Funneling users into the massive cloud project the govt is essentially paying for thru Azure.

They're a dogshit company getting by on govt contracts and friendly laws surrounding software

At the beginning of covid there were so many good memes about skype blowing a 15 year lead

I thought the same about Google Hangouts. The startup I work for uses GSuite for emails and such, so Google Meetings was what we used pre-COVID. The we struggled with reliability on it and switched to Zoom. Judging by how obnoxiously Google tries to push Hangouts now, it seems that they realized they fucked it up.

They're discontinuing video calls in Hangouts, pretty sure their video calling thing is Allo Duo (guess Allo either got renamed or got the Google curse) now, and maybe like 35 other google projects that go nowhere. Honestly that's probably why it didn't get adopted, one of the main things companies look for is long term support, and outside of gsuite, android, and the search engine, very few of their products go too long before being discontinued.

We also used hangouts a bunch pre-covid when my supervisor was on sabbatical overseas. And we used it because Skype was an unreliable, useless hassle in comparison. So the writing was already on the wall then.

I started using zoom because my uni uses it. The setup to log in with your uni account was super easy, and it imported everyone else at the uni into your contacts. You can join a class or conference easily, you can start up a one-on-one meeting with your professor easily, etc. I don't know what the behind the scenes arrangements were, but Skype clearly didn't manage to fill that void.

It's so spread out anyway. I use zoom for uni, WhatsApp video call for casual hanging out with friends, Discord for internet friends and gaming, and Skype only for older relatives. Idk, at this point I feel like Skype's main user base is older people in my immigrant community - they got used to it when it was the only option to contact family abroad for free and they're not about to learn a second option.

oh lol i have the exact same setup. Zoom for uni, WhatsApp for friends. Discord for internet stuff. Skype for boomers.
