Katzenberg, in a statement yesterday, admitted that “our standalone business model is no longer viable” while also saying “the world has changed dramatically since Quibi launched” on April 6 — revealing that he still ultimately blames the COVID pandemic for his brainchild’s failure to take off.

    Delusional CEO anyone lol

online video provider fails because of virus forcing people to stay home - makes total sense

I think his point is that the 15 minute format was meant to be seen on a bus or "on the go," which makes some sense. But yeah: The format was dumb from the get-go because a lot of the shows was unappealing.

I have nothing against 15 minute TV shows. I saw "Special," and "Aggretsuko" on Netflix which are 15 minutes for each episode and enjoyed those. So it's just Quibi having really unappealing things besides Reno! 911 on it. I mean do I really want to see "Chrissy's Court" on the bus?

      WHAT A DUMBASS

It was fucking stupid before! 5-30 second long engagements can be strung together to fit any length of time.

10-15 minutes is literally the worst possible length of time for a video. You can't get settled but you will also get fucking interrupted. Worst of both worlds.

Also definitely not because there are literally dozens of fucking streaming services out there that are almost virtually identical to each other...yeah it was totally covid

Is all the content they produced just completely gone with it? Thinking about all the high quality quibs I'll be missing.

    The what now?

Quibi is an over-the-top American short-form streaming platform that generates content for viewing on mobile devices.

So.... uhh, was it a tiktok clone?

“I don’t think of this as revolutionary as much as it’s evolutionary, in that you’re combining together these two tested forms of filmed narrative,” he says. “The first generation was two-hour movies that were created and designed to be watched in a single sitting in a movie theater. And the next generation was these very long, episodic and serialized stories that had either 13 or 26 chapters to them, and they were designed to be watched an hour or half-hour at a time in front of the TV set. What Quibi is setting out to do is the next form of film narrative — the convergence of those two ideas together. What we’re doing is telling stories that are two to two and a half hours long in chapters that are seven to ten minutes, with great talent, and designed to be watched on your phone.”

Oh lol. I can see how if you are a tech CEO lording over Silicon Valley or whatever, you might think that this was a paradigm-shifting development lol

Trashfuture's coverage of it makes it sound like the only "innovation" was trying to get around screenwriters' unions.

this is the entire "innovation" at the core of the business model and I bet if you could find the original VC pitch for it that is spelled out explicitly
