Because the democratization of internet and social media has merged genres a lot, and plenty of aspects of what once made up "nerd" """culture""" is now found everywhere. And while I don't outright define myself as a stereotypical nerd, I share many of the caracteristics, mainly due to factors such as upbringing, education and family/friends.
But yes, nerds on reddit suck because nerds mostly belong to the middle/well-off middle class, they therefore have the same shitty politics you'd associate with woke capitalism; and the fact they're Am*rican makes it worse. The question I always ask myself is how the fuck did gaming/fandom communities turn into cesspools, but I guess it has something with liberalism being a gateway to fascism once you scratch deep enough.

works the reverse way too. Normies became nerdier, but now nerd culture also became normier (less focused on discussion of ideas and intellectual curiosity)
It's because the nerds run the spaces. The nerds cultivated the spaces into nerd spaces. The spaces that aren't run by nerds aren't nerd spaces.
Reddit as a whole was a niche of the internet that blew up. Its upper-tiers of mods were created when it was still a niche and it was ultimately a tech nerd site to begin with. They are literally all nerds.

I wouldn't say all, it's definitely become more and more norm and gamed
The gaming/fandom cesspool thing: deliberate infiltration and subtle, slow indoctrination by Stormfront users over a period of 10+ years.
