Idk, 'whales' are a thing in microtransaction economies, just because on reddit the addiction being fed and what's gotten in return for the transaction is confirmation bias, ", I wouldn't at all be surprised if a couple dozen rich ghoulish people spent their time and a few gold a day worth of their money gilding china-bad posts like how someone might buy hundreds of dollars of crates or whatever in a game over years, a few at a time adding up in the background

side note: this analysis is informed by when I was a a megalib and my russiagate posts got gilded (🤮) I'd use the free gold I had to give... to gild things that fit my confirmation bias. Can only imagine how many id have done if I had a trust fund or some shit

Isn't there some weirdo who's trying to build a cult on Reddit? I don't recall his u/, but I think discussion of him popped up on SRD or some other meta sub.

So basically anyone who says his name gets their post gilded, is how I recall it working. Not sure if they're still around.

I get free points annually pretty much for modding a ~10K size sub, they're definitely not making anywhere near 100% of the awards you see given out.

Eh yeah not directly I guess. admins give out like 20K points to decent sized subs to give to top posters for the year. I’m usually one of them and I do most of the daily shit so the head mod gives me a bunch. We only have a couple dozen active posters pretty much so I can’t imagine how many points they give out to other subs.
