I ask myself this often, but if they are at all reflective of boomer comics/fox news/OAN/etc... then I think they are mostly unironic, because at this point in America there are 3 kinds of communists:
Actual MLs
Anyone without an "R" next to their name who doesn't kowtow to Trump (according to conservatives)
Russia, specifically Putin, and any twitter user or high level Republican associated with "Russian collusion" (according to libs)
Republicans: If you don't have a red R for Republican you're a commie traitor!
Democrats: But also if you do have a red R for Russia you're a commie foreign agent!
Elizabeth Warren: I believe in welfare, just corporate welfare. Do I get to be a commie guys?

I've confronted chuds on this one, demanding an answer for what communism is. More than once they've described democracy itself, i.e., when a majority will is expressed through a practice of social equity to make demands of society. My racist moron cousin literally described communism as "when idiots get together and think they know what they want, but trust someone else to get it for them" Yeah, ok, so all elected officials are communists.
