    Heritage, Mission, Culture

    🤔

More fascist or less fascist than "Department of Homeland Security"?

Definitely more. "Heritage" and "Culture" really take this into "Blood and Soil Spacetime" territory.

It weirds me out that nobody has much of a heritage or culture in space. Nobody settled out of space in order to be America

I always wondered whether space feudalism (Star Wars, Farscape, etc) was really plausible.

      But yep, sure fuckin is

If we got into space, it would be Starship Troopers or on a long enough timeline, Dune

There are treaties banning the militarization of space.

And now there is an organization that is part of the nation that signed those treaties who will enforce that treaty if need be, but who’s job primarily is to avoid anyone getting close to breaking those treaties. It’s the same way the treaties about the ocean work.

So, you're suggesting the US needed to militarize space in order to ensure no one else militarizes space? And you're just ok with that?

Nah, I’m not blanket okay with that. But A. Other nations are on record openly militarizing space. I’m not a fan of developing offensive tools, but defensive tools are a yes. B. Go and read about how insanely vulnerable and critical the GPS network is. It is terrifying.

No such thing as a defensive tool except for a shield. Everything else is an offensive tool waiting for an excuse.

Not wrong. But also not an excuse to leave the GPS network that underpins every critical infrastructure of the US unprotected. Man shrugging definitely no smooth way to go about it. Which is why I follow space policy but would never want to write it.

This whole fucking exchange is just...

    :agony-limitless:

The juxtaposition of vibes is just incredible. The pop culture nerd shit (references to not one but two franchises). The implication of brutal space imperialism. The fucking fascist tagline. I can't.

    “Heritage and culture.”

What the fuck? In space? It sounds like some confederate stupidity.
