My in laws insist we go on a cruise as soon as possible. I don't want to step foot on a cruise even when there isn't a pandemic.

Nothing like destroying the oceans to visit the ports where the cruise ship companies create a monoculture of restaurants and entertainment that is deemed safe for the rotund american families.

I went to Charleston recently and the entire pier is just chain restaurants and boutiques selling the same fast fashion as everyone else. WHY EVEN TRAVEL IF ITS JUST THE SAME GARBAGE EVERYWHERE?

"just chipotle" my ass, the only way you're eating fast food as a tourist in Paris is if you're seeking it out because you're too scared or too broke to eat anything else

I mean, we're circling back into legitimate criticism territory here. If it exists only for people with enough money...

There's a fuckton more than just Chipotle everywhere, but near the cruise port, that's all they have. Like a tumor on the landscape. The city continues to exist past the 1 square mile of exploration area cruise denizens get to explore, but that one square mile is hyper accelerated consumer capitalism. Large brands with cheap themes based on their location. A loudspeaker constantly reminding the cruisees that their themed consumption time is nearly over and they have to report back to the floating consumption vehicle.
