Blade Runner is a thing solely due to its aesthetic.

But, can't deny, what an aesthetic.

Not unlike how people like Robocop because “guns/explosions are cool” while being blind to the setting.

Ok, but Robocop is an excellent popcorn movie that keeps my attention at all times while also being a fantastic exploration of Dystopia, Manliness and Freedom through an 80's America lense that I can't quite give to Blade Runner. But I haven't watched enough noir or neo-noir to be able to dwelve any further.

Robocop is waaaay more accessible thematically than Blade Runner

Robocop was also, other than the bleeding obvious message, a satire of current movies in the Joe Bronson shoots up some inner city kids genre. So it has the same basic appeal in case you entirely miss the point. Indeed, Robocop later got morphed into a symbol of justice and got marketed to kids.

Glacial pacing can be used to build tension and intrigue. Bladerunner does this kinda poorly but it works if you are in the right headspace for it and the ending pays off.

Guess my problem was similar to Star Wars in that I was told I was going to watch the greatest sci-fi movie of all time and with a very poor attention span and very basic film experience, it didn't hold up pretty well. I really liked Harris' take on the ending as well.

yea, I basically agree with you but I also didn't make it to the end because of the rape scene that's played off like it's cool and normal. like I respect that the movie probably has artistic merit anyway but... just no.

Everyone needs their one outstanding contrarian take and this one's pretty fun.
