While scrolling, my fat ass fingers sometimes accidentally tap the upvote or downvote button, and don't go back to change it because I literally do not care at all. I don't give a shit about authoritarianism, I'ma goddamn Marxist-Leninist, but can we just stick to banning people for what they actually do instead of trying to sus out and speculate what they truly feel deep down in their hearts? If people are being bigots, ban them. If people are poking at the boundaries, ban them. But a single upvote or downvote literally doesn't change anything at all. Someone who never posts or comments anything but downvoted posts they don't like and upvotes posts they do, has an extremely negligible impact on the discourse. Why does this even need to be said?
Also can you not ban me for this, maybe?
This is silly guys, maybe shutting down the site as a joke should be ok, this is the dumbest and most unnecessary struggle session :thonk:
edit:
Just at first glance, what makes sense to me is flag posts that are posted in anti_cishet that are solely trans positive, e.g. Brooke's "I love my trans comrades posts", and then if a user has downvoted an arbitrary amount of those, then inspect their profile to see the trend, and then ban them if necessary. Use it sparingly and accurately rather than unnecessarily sweep up a lot of bystanders in the process. Just a suggestion.
Just because something isn't important to you doesn't mean it isn't important to other people. We get it, you're super cool and don't care. Well our trans comrades do care and we care about them.
Yeah. If you don't understand how it could be dispiriting to see posts about trans topics downvoted, then I think you're being willfully dumb.
You can’t know why someone downvoted a post though! Should I be banned because I’m not paying attention to what I completely accidentally upvote and downvote? There’s a million to downvote or upvote a post, and multitudes of what could be considered trans validating content that could be downvoted for a reason completely unrelated to the trans content in the post. Like the dude who downvoted all the featured posts! It’s just so heavy handed
mate, the push back at every discussion about transphobia has been driving trans comrades away for two months. many have totally left. the votes are a proxy for who's trying to make the site uncomfortable for trans people. name a SINGLE good reason to downvote trans love threads. there aren't any.
people can always appeal the ban. making the space less reactionary and more friendly to marginalized people has to come first.
it does fucking hurt to be called transphobic when I’m not
seriously: boo fucking hoo. I got attacked by people screaming slurs at me just a couple of weeks ago. what's your excuse? get some fucking perspective.
Listen dawg, I’m not suggesting we give transphobia an inch. What I’m suggesting is that we do it more precisely and accurately, and put more time and energy in to the plan. It’s a matter of methodology pure and simple, and judging by the response from the community, the methodology is not good.
We’re on the same side comrade, we want the same thing: purging terfs is cool and good. We can just do it better.
judging by the response from the community, the methodology is not good
the response is overwhelmingly positive...
I have a little sympathy for that person but ultimately it should be clear that a downvote sends a signal like "this is bad" or "I disagree with this", and without any written explanation it's fair to assume somebody will take that on face value. It'd be like responding to the post with a thumbs-down emoji or something- if you don't think that would be acceptable for a post, then why would downvoting it be?
As for totally accidental downvotes and upvotes... I dunno, are they really that frequent? If so maybe the fix is a UI improvement
I made a suggestion on a different comment, but there are ways to ban people for downvoting that are far more accurate, and far less heavy handed. This whole idea needed more time in the oven to make sure it was done right, and judging by the response it clearly wasn’t.
Yeah I’m getting a lot of that, see my edit. But yeah that’s a good example, I get that.
I care a lot about trans rights, and banning transphobia, but this has gotta be the most heavy handed way to do it. Mistaking disagreements in methodology for bigotry is bad, as there are trans comrades who also think the methodology is poor. You don’t fucking know me, and it does fucking hurt to be called transphobic when I’m not. At the very, very least I’m trying my best...
Bans are appealable, worst case people can just make a new account and not upvote transphobic stuff.
Sometimes you gotta send a message. We're not gonna let reactionaries hide inside the algorithm like they do on Reddit.
It's not a single downvote, they said in the pinned post that 3 is the threshold for established users. But I agree that vote-inspection should be used EXTREMELY sparingly, and the admins should be very transparent about their inspections. To be fair, Beatnik did post the complete list of posts that were checked for downvotes.
And maybe warn people before banning them, especially if they're right near the threshold?
