    Smells like badjacketing to me.

Never heard this term before. Are you saying Gloria is badjacketing the trans woman?

Okay... so from the quote somebody has decided to tell Gloria that "because she is cisgender" she cannot have an opinion on the matter.

Where ever this quote comes from, outside of context, feels like somebody is badjacketing Gloria. Trying to paint her as a transphobe.

This response was transphobic as hell regardless of the wider context going on around it. Best interpretation was that it was just badly worded.

          ?

How is it transphobic? Is there more context?

If I tried to talk to somebody about something and was told that I have to be quiet because "I'm cisgendered" and i pointed out how that was pretty crappy to essentialise me by my gender, why would I be in the wrong?

I don't think so. Referring to someone reductively as "cis woman" IS intended to belittle who a person is. She's not wrong about that. I think the point comes across saying that she has a right to speak not because she's cis but because she's latina and racism is occurring. That seems totally appropriate.

Yeah I guess with context that might be the case, but I think she should have been more careful as the face of the party in how she worded that. Because out of context, it comes off as TERFish.

Yeah as others have said here, reading it as just this quote it can read as a person who doesn't understand the meaning of cis.

I think it'll get passed around by wreckers out of context for a while and get debunked until it's widely known. Then it'll fizzle out.

I've seen the twitters of the people making the accusation surrounding this quote. They seem completely in earnest and not (intentionally?) wrecking. Maybe i'm a rube, idk.

Hence, why it kinda feels like badjacketing. It requires a lack of context AND me to be primed to assume that Gloria LaRiva is a TERF.

Think about it another way. Why would, whomever she was responding to, have decided to bring Gloria LaRiva's gender into the conversation at all?

Yeah I agree with you now and deleted the thread lol. I didnt know the full context. I assumed, stupidly, that the trans woman calling Gloria "cis" was doing so because Gloria was talking authoritatively on trans issues or something like that.
