Was watching the movie Compliance with my mom a bit ago, basically a dramatization of the real strip search prank call scam (directed by one of the dudes who wrote Homestar Runner, of all things!). Dude claiming to be a cop calls a fast food place and tells the manager an employee stole from someone and that they need to do a strip search (it escalates but that’s what it leads to). My mom (and a lot of critics) thought the point was about how stupid everyone involved was to not once question the orders being given to them, but I saw it as perfectly realistic; a few times the characters do question the “cop”’s orders, and he basically yells them back into compliace (roll credits!) by telling them he has the power to make things much harder on them if they don’t listen (which a real cop absolutely would). It’s kind of like the inverse of the unmarked feds arresting people in Portland months ago; to any onlookers or even the victims involved, it may as well have just been a random kidnapping, but you bet your ass if someone defended themselves with lethal force they’d be met in kind, and if not, tried for killing a fed.
