I'm more than willing to believe that this did happen, but I'm also sceptical as the main source I can find is some French news wire.
Worth noting they also source the Washington based CHRD (Chinese Human Rights Defenders) which in 2015 received 99.94% of their $800k+ funding from government grants, as well as $520,000 in 2012 from the National Endowment for Democracy - a group founded by Reagan with links to the CIA - and $490,000 in 2012.

I dislike that subreddit personally, and got sick of it that I mocked them enough that they banned me. Sino is much better, but both are filled to the brim with ABCs who don’t know a damn thing about China and weird redditors who are online to much.
Edit: I think this may have come off to harsh. I’m glad they are interested in learning more about their families cultural homeland, but it comes off as someone’s stuck in that awkward stage of development. Like a cultural version of chuunibyou.
If you want legit left critiques of China just try and read more reputable left journals like made in china journal and Chuang. It's mostly in depth articles with lots of Chinese sources. Chaung had a really cool one on memes in the migrant labor community about their working conditions.
