    I don't think we should be hanging gentrification on an individual renter, either. It's a systemic problem. To the extent individuals are to blame, that blame falls on people consciously fucking over poor neighborhoods and people who prevent changes to that system.

      true yeah, I think of it as more of a side-effect of the capitalist mode of production that we currently are living with, and a sign that a different attitude toward housing and neighborhood/community development is absolutely necessary going forward.         I remember some line in the Foucault-Chomsky debate along the lines of "we're tunneling into the same mountain, but maybe from different parts of the mountain." Whatever else anyone thinks of those two, that's a good way we should approach conversations with other leftists.
