It's interesting to see his image get adopted as a progressive force against the US empire.

These are the same people who drew the viral George Floyd mural back in June.

They don't really care about what the political opinions of the 20 Americans who fought for the PKK were. The vast majority of people don't even know about them. There is more at stake here. Politics are not the same all over the world, there are some sets of beliefs that in the US signify someone has x position in the ideological spectrum that completely fail in other places. Erdogan phrased some support for the George Floyd protests because he owns the US. Someone in Turkey believing the US has a racist police problem doesn't mean they're progressive or even that they're not racist themselves. It's kinda like how western islamophobes get angry about the treatment of uighurs in China.

It doesn't mean they are reactionary, either. We know nothing about these peoples' politics besides the fact that they oppose US involvement in the region.

It seemed to me that a story about "BLM cooperating with the PKK" would serve as better propaganda. Turkey is at war with the PKK, they are a more pressing issue. US & Turkey relations are not that bad. Less a reason to propagandize.

The only we hear about Uighers is because China is a state enemy.

Yes, I agreed with that part. I also agreed that they're probably cool.

US & Turkey relations are not that bad.

You may think that from the perspective of someone who lives in the US so you may have missed a couple things. The US is actually gonna start enforcing (pretty light) sanctions against Turkey, this was voted a few weeks ago, relations have been getting worse for some time. There's many reasons for that but the main reason is that Erdogan feels somewhat restricted by the US and has been flirting with Putin for a while because he wants to be less dependent on other powers.

even light sanctions on turkey from a US POV represent the decline of american empire and influence in the region and the "loss" of turkey
