Per National Geographic data... Americans consume 3,641 calories a day while Cubans consume 3,279. That's a large difference, but it's driven by the fact that Americans overeat - Cuba's daily calories are in line with rich, capitalist countries that don't overeat, such as Spain (3,187), Australia (3,267), and Hong Kong (3,260). So in terms of total calories, Cubans are doing just fine. Not to mention with greater equality, I would imagine fewer Cubans go hungry than Americans do i.e. the average American calories have some fat tails.

Now breaking this down by food type, Americans consume more Sugars & Fats, Meat, and Dairy & Eggs while Cubans consume more Grains and Produce. We all know it's not like Americans are consuming a bunch of healthy fats, it's mostly garbage. And sugar is garbage. And the quality of meat that most Americans consume is questionable. Compare that to Cuba, which has a lot of sustainable agriculture and (as I understand it) they stay away from a lot of pesticides and GMO foods. I don't think it's a stretch to assume that Cubans on average probably eat healthier than the average American.

Where's the beans on them charts? If they're a subset of grains for some reason, Cubans win hands-down!

Solid post. Reminds me of that old CIA report from the 80s showing that Russians had better diets than Americans

I think beans are in produce as they're a legume like potatoes.

Botanically speaking, they are fruit. They bear seeds.

There are some narrow horticultural definitions that require fruit to come from a wooded tree, but that also invalidates most fruit.

Botanically, zucchinis, squash, and pumpkins are fruits.
