Per National Geographic data... Americans consume 3,641 calories a day while Cubans consume 3,279. That's a large difference, but it's driven by the fact that Americans overeat - Cuba's daily calories are in line with rich, capitalist countries that don't overeat, such as Spain (3,187), Australia (3,267), and Hong Kong (3,260). So in terms of total calories, Cubans are doing just fine. Not to mention with greater equality, I would imagine fewer Cubans go hungry than Americans do i.e. the average American calories have some fat tails.

Now breaking this down by food type, Americans consume more Sugars & Fats, Meat, and Dairy & Eggs while Cubans consume more Grains and Produce. We all know it's not like Americans are consuming a bunch of healthy fats, it's mostly garbage. And sugar is garbage. And the quality of meat that most Americans consume is questionable. Compare that to Cuba, which has a lot of sustainable agriculture and (as I understand it) they stay away from a lot of pesticides and GMO foods. I don't think it's a stretch to assume that Cubans on average probably eat healthier than the average American.

Where's the beans on them charts? If they're a subset of grains for some reason, Cubans win hands-down!

Solid post. Reminds me of that old CIA report from the 80s showing that Russians had better diets than Americans

I think beans are in produce as they're a legume like potatoes.

Botanically speaking, they are fruit. They bear seeds.

There are some narrow horticultural definitions that require fruit to come from a wooded tree, but that also invalidates most fruit.

Wait something is not right with people consuming an average of 3600 calories. Like I get that there is an obesity problem in USA but Don't women need around 1600-2000 at an average weight and men need 2000-2400 or something like that?

I maintain weight at around ~3200-3400 I think, I'm pretty damn active tho. All my friends who worked construction n shit eat and drink like crazy; some get fat but for a lot I know it's fucking hard work and they do need a good deal of caloric intake in general.

Those ranges are for average BMIs. If you're overweight or obese then you need more than that just to maintain weight, but I'd guess that most overweight people are gaining a little bit all the time.

How the hell do you manage 3000+ calories a day? Are people really eating that much? Even if doing manual labour?

It tells me that globally there's plenty of food for everyone, and we could afford to each in much more environmentally sustainable ways even if it lowered food production.

Absolutely. And we do have the planning capacity to distribute this efficiently globally. Yet we use it to deliver fidget spinners (remember fidget spinners?) and make Bezos rich

Imagine working an 8-10 hour work day doing a shitty unfulfilling job with a 1 hour commute both ways. Now you can spend 1-3 hours shopping, planning, preparing and cooking a home cooked meal for 2-6 people OR you can just phone it in an order a pizza and a 2liter of soda

I was there, but I forced my alienation in said cooking... on days I wasnt briandead. Its probably the soda, isnt it? I didnt think how much calories are there in soda...

I'll eat close to 3000 with an hour workout or so in a mostly sedentary job. Manual labor deserves probably closer to 4000

they did have a period of time where they were malnourished directly after the soviet union fell, as they relied on soviet imports a lot. they have since developed self sustaining agriculture. im sure theyd use gmos if they could but you have to partake in capitalism to get that tech.

One of the nice things about working remotely because of the pandemic is that I actually get to prepare my meals at home instead of scurrying to a different fried food factory every day to escape my depressing cube for 45 minutes.

I tried so much more food at the start of the pandemic. Even frying stuff up at home is so much healthier than fast fried food cause it isnt loaded to shit with salt to make you buy a drink and other weird unnatural shit.

It's dairy and eggs combined, my hunch is that the Cuban diet probably has a decent amount of eggs but little dairy.
