I distinctly remember Christian Lindner, the leader of the Liberal-Democratic Party (FDP) of Germany, speaking about standing in line behind some immigrant at the bakery, who spoke German poorly. Lindner then went on to fear monger that he did not know wether that person was a ”highly qualified AI developer from India or wether he was an at best tolerated illegal alien“. And this was no off the cuff comment that blew up, this was part of his speech at the party’s general convention. His leadership position wasn’t even challenged over this. Sure, there was some outrage on the internet over this, but there were no lasting consequences at all.
