To be honest, I don't see how adding a shit-ton more guns held by people of all sorts of political loyalties helps the situation. Sadat was iced surrounded by loyalist guns.
I think a lot of what we've been learning is that the ruling castes of the US Government are incredibly myopic and, possibly, deeply stupid. They're relying on umpteen fucking weekend warriors for their protection, which is umpteen thousand chances for some dude to slip a loaded magazine in to the bottom of his ruck and then take down his three least favorite congress critters.
