    During the Russian revolution of 1917 the soldiers who had harsh conditions created democratic councils without the officers and those who helped them.
    There were a couple of people who wanted to just better the conditions, but after a bit most where agreeing to the unnecessary existence of the (aristocratic) officer corps with their privileges.
    Those soldier councils would become an essential part of the revolutionary masses and defend the revolution against the reaction. It is to show if the current soldiers would at any point side with the masses against the bourgeoisie or shoot at who they consider below them. If they are experiencing needlessly harsh conditions that might be pointed out and used to radicalize a few of them. Not totally likely though and I don't know enough for any material analysis.
