yes, before normal indigenous people were absorbed into the death cult of production which socialists uphold. Very telling that these 1st world labor aristocrats put themselves opposite to the group of people outside the Roman empire.
Functional does not equal good, living in those societies still sucked majorly just like living in every other human society. At least the 'death cult of production' allows for relatively decent and more importantly independent lives for a lot of disabled people who wouldn't get that otherwise.
I mean, it depends on the sources you look at but hunter gather people are known to be healthier and happier than even middle agrarian people, and tend to take better care of the sick and elder than we do now today most places.
True enough the life could be brutal, so functional doesn't equate to good, but we aren't looking at getting either.
